Questions
About AVIF to JPG
Why can't I open AVIF files?
AVIF is a new format based on the AV1 video codec. Browsers display it, but many photo viewers, editors and upload forms don't yet support it.
My browser says it can't read the file
AVIF decoding comes from your browser. Update to a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 16+ and try again.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Drop a whole folder's worth of images, set one output for the whole batch, and convert them in one go. Several results download together as a single ZIP.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Wemute converts files inside your browser tab with your device's own processor. The file contents and names never reach our servers, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Format comparison
How AVIF and JPG differ
| AVIF | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (AV1), very efficient | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Best for | Next-generation web images | Photos you need to share or upload anywhere |
| Compatibility | Recent browsers; patchy in desktop apps | Universal |
AVIF: Often smaller than WebP, but slower to encode and not yet accepted everywhere. JPG: The safest choice for compatibility. Transparent areas become white.
