Questions
About Video to GIF
How do I keep the GIF small?
Keep it short (under 6 seconds), narrow (480 px or less) and use 10–12 fps. Every extra second and pixel multiplies the size because GIF compresses poorly.
Is there sound in the GIF?
No — GIF is an image format and cannot carry audio. Convert to MP4 instead if you need sound.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Wemute converts files inside your browser tab with your device's own processor. The file contents and names never reach our servers, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Format comparison
How MP4 and GIF differ
| MP4 | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (usually H.264) | Lossless, 256 colours |
| Best for | Sharing and uploading video anywhere | Short looping animations |
| Compatibility | Universal | Universal, autoplays everywhere |
MP4: H.264 in MP4 plays on virtually every phone, browser, TV and editor. GIF: Large files for real video; keep clips short and small for sharing.
