Compress a video to a smaller MP4

Drop a video below, choose a quality and maximum resolution, and press Compress. Wemute re-encodes it as an efficient H.264 MP4 — lowering the resolution to 720p often makes a phone video 5–10 times smaller.

Questions

About Compress Video

Which setting gives the biggest saving?

Resolution matters most: 4K to 1080p or 1080p to 720p cuts the size dramatically. Then lower the quality step for further savings.

Why is video slower than a desktop app?

Browser video encoding runs on the CPU without hardware acceleration. Wemute avoids re-encoding whenever the video stream can simply be moved into the new container, which makes most MOV and MKV to MP4 jobs finish in seconds.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Wemute converts files inside your browser tab with your device's own processor. The file contents and names never reach our servers, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded, but your browser's memory sets a practical ceiling: files up to about 2 GB work on most computers. The first conversion downloads the converter engine (about 10 MB) once; after that it is cached.
